I have built numerous new railings, gates, and architectural elements over the years but one of the biggest jobs I have done was for a World Heavyweight Boxing champion whose 54,000 square foot home is south of Atlanta.  There were over 5,000 handmade elements in this one railing and close to 5 tons of steel.  A railing like this, with solid 3/4" pickets, 1/2" x 1 1/2" top and bottom stringers, and lots of handworked decoration costs around $500 per linear foot installed.
